About this hike
Balloonfararsteinen is an easily accessible hiking destination in Seljord, and is suitable for both families with children and those who want a short hike with views and history.
From the parking lot at the top of Stigfjellet (at the end of the road), you start with a quiet walk along a gravel road. After a few hundred meters, take a marked path to the right and follow it a short distance up the hill. You'll soon arrive at the Balloonfararsteinen (Balloonfarer's Stone) itself - a distinctive stone named after a dramatic event when a balloonist landed in the area in the 1800s.
From the stone you have a great view of Seljord and the surrounding area. Information signs by the stone tell you more about the history behind the name and the event that made the town famous.
Alternative route:
For those who want a longer and steeper hike, there is also a path from the bottom of Stigfjellet, at the start of the road. This route provides more vertical meters and can be combined as a round trip for those who want a little extra exercise.
Hiking tips:
- Short and easy hike from the top parking lot - suitable for most people.
- Feel free to bring children - the trail is easy to follow and there is a lot to see and experience.
- A nice little hike all year round, even on snow with crampons or snowshoes.
