About this hike
Øverlandseika - an ancient tree with a thousand stories
Øverlandseika is one of the most distinctive and oldest oaks in Telemark, and perhaps in the country. It stands there - crooked, wide and majestic - out on the moor, in the border zone between forest and open cultural landscape. Its age is estimated at between 800 and 900 years, and the oak follows the old saying:
"It grows for 300 years, lives for 300, and dies for 300."
Such a life cycle means that today we meet a tree in its slow final phase - living and dying at the same time.
Tour route:
The tour starts at Trollebotn, up on Øverlandsheii. Drive as far as you can until you reach a barrier and park there. From there you go up on a gravel road, which leads you through open and beautiful moorland terrain.
The hike to the oak is easy and suitable for all ages, which makes this an excellent family hike or wonder trip - where small feet and big thoughts can wander together.
After a short while, the landscape opens up and you see the large, crooked silhouette:
Øverlandseika - like an anchor from the past in the middle of living nature.
Facts about the tour:
- Length: Approx. 1.5-2 km h/r
- Gradient: Easy
- Time: Approx. 30-60 minutes in total
- Surface: Gravel road and tread
- Level: Easy - suitable for everyone
- Parking: At the barrier after Trollebotn on Øverlandsheii
Hiking tips:
- Bring a snack - perfect place for a quiet lunch
- Let the children look for clues in nature: animal tracks, leaf shapes, insects
- The tour is great all year round - but especially nice in late summer sun and autumn colors
- Show respect for the tree - don't climb or break off branches
