Trail story

Brattefjell-Vindeggen

Brattefjell-Vindeggen

Brattefjell-Vindeggen landscape conservation area is located in a mountainous area south-east of Møsvatn in Telemark. The name comes from the two mountains Brattefjell (1540 m) and Vindeggen (1516 m) that lie at the core of the mountain area. The total area is just under 382 square kilometers. The area is privately owned by 299 properties.

Brattefjell-Vindeggen landscape conservation area was established in 2000. Apart from Hardangervidda, Brattefjell-Vindeggen is the largest contiguous mountain area in Telemark without significant technical interventions. The area lies within the municipalities of Hjartdal, Seljord, Tinn and Vinje and is located south of Møsvatn/Rjukan, west of Gaustatoppen, north of Hjartdal and east of Rauland.

The purpose of protecting Brattefjell-Vindeggen is to preserve a beautiful and unique natural landscape with untouched high mountains and mountain forests, to preserve the biological diversity in the area with its wild reindeer population and rich plant and animal life, and to preserve valuable cultural landscapes and cultural monuments.
