About this hike
Geitekyrkja - three peaks and magnificent views in the middle of Lifjell
Geitekyrkja (1032 m) is beautifully situated in the middle of Lifjell, as part of the vast mountain plateau between Grimaren (1169 m) on one side and Tjønnstauljuvet on the other. The summit consists of three distinct heights, and it's extra special to see them all on the same trip.
Tour route:
The tour starts from the large parking lot at Grimås, a natural starting point for many Lifjell tours. From there you follow the path towards Tvitjønnan, a quiet and beautiful area in easy mountain terrain. From Tvitjønnan, continue in the direction of Hometjønn, and then straight up the hill towards Geitekyrkja.
There are several ways to go up:
- You can turn left and go up to the back peak first, which gives you a nice ridge walk over all three nutanes.
- Or you can follow the signposted and marked path straight ahead towards the main peak.
Once you've visited the peaks, you should walk all the way out to the front groove - here you get a phenomenal view of Tjønnstauljuvet, Venelinuten, Lifjellplatået, and on towards Telemark's many blue mountains. On a clear day you can see a long way - towards Skorve, Gaustatoppen and the hills of Vinje.
Facts about the trip:
- Highest point: 1032 m above sea level
- Length: Approx. 8-10 km round trip, depending on route
- Gradient: Moderate, but steady climb in the last part
- Level: Moderate - suitable for hikers in normal shape
- Surface: Path and mountain terrain, well marked
Hiking tips:
- Take the time to walk over all three peaks - it makes for a great round trip
- The view from the first peak is one of the best on Lifjell
- Suitable both as a long afternoon hike and as a day hike with a break at Hometjønn or Tvitjønnan
- Lifjell can offer rapidly changing weather - wear windproof clothing
