About this hike
Nupsredet - wild nature in Ryfylkeheiane (1362 m)
Nupsredet is located high up on Haukelifjell, in the dramatic mountain area between Telemark and Vestland, on the edge of the Ryfylkeheiane landscape conservation area.
The starting point for the tour is the plains just before the Haukeli tunnel, where it is also known for the sale of goat cheese - a landmark along the E134. From here you head upwards in a fantastic landscape, first into Nupsdalen, which is long, wild and beautiful.
The trail follows the valley upwards via Nupshallene to the idyllic Vesle Nupstjørna, and further into a concave, U-shaped valley between Verjesteinsnuten and Store Nup. After a steady climb of 400-500 meters in height over about 6 km, you'll reach Nupsredet - a high pass with panoramic views of some of the most untouched and magnificent nature in southwestern Norway.
If you want more, you can continue up to Store Nup (1661 m), but this is a demanding hike with extra vertical meters and a lot of up and down.
This area is particularly beautiful in late summer and fall, just before winter and the weather takes over. Nupsredet is not marked as a tourist trail, so the hike requires a map, compass or GPS and experience of traveling in the high mountains.
