About this hike
Sveigen - straight up the rock face and straight into the view
Sveigen (1389 m) is a prominent peak just above the Haukeli tunnel, and offers one of the best views on Haukeli Mountain. But: this is a hike for those who aren't afraid to go straight up into the rock face. The hike is short but steep - and the landscape is wild, open and magnificent.
Hiking route from the tunnel mouth on the west side of the Haukeli tunnel
You start the hike right at the western tunnel mouth on the E134, where it is possible to park along the road (be careful and respect traffic). The path is not clear at the start, but the route goes straight up the hillside, and you get a climb from the first step.
The hike is about 2.7 km to the top, with a total of 572 vertical meters of ascent, and most of it goes through rocks and steep mountain terrain. There is no technical climbing, but you should be mountain-wise and have good footwear, as the surface is loose and steep.
When you reach the top, an impeccable view awaits:
- To the south: Store Nup, Verjesteinsnuten and further across Vågslid and Dyrskar.
- To the north: View across the valley towards Middyrvatnet, which lies silent and sparkling in the vast high mountain landscape.
- To the east: The Haukelifjell plateau itself, with rocks, snowdrifts and plains
This is a real high mountain in miniature, where the views come quickly, but not for free.
Facts about the trip:
- Length: Approx. 2.7 km one way
- Height meters: 572 m
- Time required: 1.5-2.5 hours up, 1-1.5 hours down
- Level: Demanding - steep and rocky
- Substrate: Loose rocks and steep mountain terrain
- Markings: Little to none - use map or GPS
Hiking tips:
- Only hike in good weather - fog and rain make the hike unsafe
- Wear high mountain boots with good support
- Bring a windbreaker - the summit is exposed
- Enjoy the silence - here the mountain opens up and you can be completely present
